Today monopolies are built on market empathy and business creativity

Back in the days monopolies were built on the grounds of owning and controlling every single part of the value chain needed to produce and deliver a product or service so cheap that no-one else could compete with the offer. Today there is quite easy access to most parts of the value chain whether you can find it in your neighbourhood or you have to skype with a guy in China called Chang Cheap. The new monopolies are built on other ressources than before. Change capacity, market empathy, high performance creativity and brand equity are the drivers of the new monopolies. Cheaper won’t make it any more. More value, more coolness, more authenticity, more passion, more excitement - all created with the speed of lightning is what it takes to build monopolies today. According to Fast Company the Apple iPad’s got a 95,5% marketshare of the 4.4 million tablets sold in the summer of 2010. I guess that’s kind of monopoly.
